If you opt for fiberglass, you should be prepared to learn. If you want to accurately determine the resonance frequency of the system, set the multimeter to current measurement, and then hook it up in series with the subwoofer to your amplifier, then you can use the frequency generator to drive the subwoofer for you. Vented enclosures, which are also known as ported or bass-reflex systems are harder to do than sealed boxes, but they offer extra construction work that is necessary if you want to install a vent which is something that will have its own rewards in the long run. An amplifier turn on wire will also have to be connected behind the radio. Use your wiring harness to attach the new speaker, or solder or crimp the connections.
You will need to remove your old radio from the dash so that you can connect the audio cable from your radio to the amplifier. You will have to make sure that your radio has audio outputs, which are also called RCA outs or preamp outputs, so that you can plug your audio cables into them.
If your radio does not have audio outputs of its own, you will need to purchase an amplifier that can accept a speaker-level input or you will have to get a converter that will convert a speaker-level signal to an audio cable signal. An amplifier turn on wire will also have to be connected behind the radio.
Here are the steps needed to remove the stereo:
1. Figure out how the current radio is secured into the dash. In most cases, this will mean taking it apart and removing certain parts of the dashboard or trim. Gather the appropriate tools and lighting if you need it. Place a drop cloth over any dash, console or front seats that you want to protect from debris.
2. Remove any screws that are holding the dashboard or trim pieces in place. Carefully search for screws that hold the dash piece. Be sure to check inside ashtrays, glove boxes for any of the hidden screws. In some cases, the dash piece is held in place with clips that are attached to its back. These clips will need to be removed with a panel tool. Before pulling out the dash panel though, you have to make sure that all screws and clips have been removed.
3. Once the dash or trim pieces are removed, the radio should be easy to see. Typically there are brackets or flanges holding in it the dash. Remove the screws or bolts holding the brackets and flanges.
4. Carefully slide the radio out only far enough so you can reach the wiring on the back. Depending on the space that you have available, you may be able to connect the audio cables without having to unplug the harnesses and take out the radio. Most of the time, you will need to remove the radio from the dash in order to plug in the audio cables and route them behind the dash.
